Sophie Says “Support Barkwheats Dog Biscuits”

My (and Sophie’s) Barkwheats Discovery Story: I was recently in Maine visiting family and friends.   My mom pointed out an article from the Bangor Daily News, the local paper, about a  Maine business called Barkwheats.  I was immediately excited for several reasons.  First, I love learning about organic, local and sustainable businesses.   This got even better for me because I recognized the name of one of the co-owners (Chris Roberts) as a fellow Bangor High School Graduate.  Second, I enjoy reading and exploring all things surrounding food, especially when they are combined with supporting organic local farmers, which is something Barkwheats values as part of its core mission.  Three, I love my Golden Retriever, Sophie, and am highly attentive to what she eats and where the products I buy come from.   So, as you can see I was very excited and eager to learn more about the company, find out if the products are sold in my local area of Rockville, MD (Montgomery County) and give the product(s) a try.

Support Barkwheats on Kickstarter

Visit the Barkwheats Kickstarter Site!  The minimum donation is only a dollar, although once you learn more about Barkwheats you will want to support much more (I must also point out the great thank you gifts, like Barkwheats Dog Biscuits and various folk art items).  If we each give a little we can help support Barkwheats as they work to expand their business and meet customer demand.

The Goal: Raise $25,000

The Deadline: August 8, 2010

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Barkwheats is  carried in several smaller market-style grocery stores near me (the closest being Mom’s Organic Market on Parklawn Drive).  I had heard of Mom’s, but had never been there, so off I went.  Barkwheats is not sold yet in my usual pet shop (Key word “yet.” I shall be passing on info about Barkwheats and asking my dog & cat market to consider carrying Barkwheats biscuits.  The values of being organic, natural, sustainable, etc. fit in perfectly with the vision of the store).

I was thinking that I would try the Blueberry & Lavender, but they only had the Sea Vegetable & Chamomile in stock.  I excitedly grabbed a box and headed home to give it the Sophie taste test.  Sophie and I both first took a sniff and it smelled quite yummy.  Then I gave it to Sophie.  She put it on the ground, gave it a lick or two and then grabbed it in her mouth and began crunching away.  I handed her a second one and with no hesitation she happily crunched away, tail wagging of course.
